He worked as a social worker in Winnipeg for several years, and he became involved in politics in the early 1930s.

In 1934, Douglas was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as a member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). He served in Parliament for 10 years, and he was a vocal advocate for social justice and equality. In 1944, Douglas was elected premier of Saskatchewan. He served as premier for 17 years, and he introduced a number of important social reforms, including Medicare.
