Dreyer was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1889. He began his career in the film industry as a journalist and critic. In 1913, he directed his first film, The Parson's Widow. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it established Dreyer as a major figure in Danish cinema.

Dreyer's films are often characterized by their realism, their psychological insight, and their use of symbolism. He was a master of the long take, and he often used the camera to create a sense of intimacy and claustrophobia. His films often explore themes of religion, faith, and the human condition.

Ordet is one of Dreyer's most acclaimed films. The film tells the story of a young man who returns home from the war and finds his family in a state of crisis. His father is dying, and his sister is pregnant with the child of a married man. The young man is torn between his faith and his desire to help his family.

Ordet is a powerful and moving film that explores the themes of faith, hope, and love. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it won the Palme d'Or at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival.

Dreyer died in Copenhagen in 1968. He is considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, and his films continue to be studied and admired by film lovers around the world.
