In 1934, Hamer was assigned to lead the posse that would track down and kill Bonnie and Clyde. On May 23, 1934, Hamer and his posse ambushed Bonnie and Clyde in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. The outlaws were killed in a hail of gunfire.

After the death of Bonnie and Clyde, Hamer continued to serve as a Texas Ranger. He retired in 1936 and moved to Austin, Texas. He died in 1955 and is buried in the Texas State Cemetery.
