But behind the legendary performer was a deeply troubled man, wrestling with inner demons that would ultimately lead to his tragic demise. After the Dance: My Life with Marvin Gaye is the intimate and revealing memoir of Janis Gaye, Marvin's first wife and the woman who stood by his side through some of his most turbulent years.

Janis's story begins in the early 1960s, when she met the rising star at a Motown recording session. They fell deeply in love and married in 1963. The early years of their marriage were blissful, as Marvin's career soared and they welcomed two children into the world.

However, as Marvin's fame grew, so too did his struggles with addiction and infidelity. Janis found herself trapped in a cycle of abuse and heartbreak. The man she had loved so deeply became a stranger, driven by his demons.

In After the Dance, Janis tells the unflinching truth about her life with Marvin. She reveals the highs and lows of their relationship, the joy and the pain, the love and the betrayal. She speaks candidly about Marvin's struggles with addiction and mental illness, and the impact it had on her and their family.

But After the Dance is more than just a story of tragedy. It is also a testament to the power of love and forgiveness. Despite all that she endured, Janis never stopped caring for Marvin. She tells of the day he was shot and killed by their son, and the overwhelming grief that consumed her.

After the Dance is a deeply personal and moving memoir that offers an unprecedented glimpse into the life of one of music's greatest icons. It is a story of love, loss, betrayal, and redemption. It is a book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

˃ Excerpt from After the Dance

"I met Marvin Gaye in 1963, and we were married a few months later. He was the most charming, charismatic man I had ever met. I was immediately drawn to his energy and his passion for life.

We had two beautiful children together, Marvin III and Nona. For a while, we were a happy family. Marvin was a devoted father and a loving husband. But as his career took off, he started to change.

He became more and more distant and withdrawn. He started drinking heavily and using drugs. He became paranoid and jealous. He would often accuse me of cheating on him, even though I never did.

The abuse started slowly at first. He would slap me or push me. But over time, it became more and more severe. He would beat me with his fists, and he would even threaten to kill me.

I was terrified of him, but I also loved him. I couldn't bring myself to leave him. I kept hoping that he would change, that he would come back to the man I had fallen in love with.

But it never happened. The abuse continued, and it got worse and worse. I finally realized that I couldn't live with him anymore. I took my children and left.

I never stopped loving Marvin. Even after all that he put me through, I still cared about him. I still hoped that he would get his life together.

But it was too late. He was killed by our son in 1984. I was devastated. I had lost the love of my life, and I had lost the father of my children.

In the years since Marvin's death, I have come to terms with what happened. I have forgiven him for the pain he caused me. I have learned to love myself again.

I wrote this book to tell my story. I wanted to share the truth about my life with Marvin. I wanted to show the world that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope.
